Daniele Oppi
(1932-2006) He was born in Via Carlo Tenca, in Milan, and has always shown a polyhedric personality. He started to paint in 1946 as a self-taught person. He graduated at the Parini secondary school for classical studies. He enrolled in the course of classical studies at the State University of Milan and, at the same time, he worked in the company of his father Giuseppe. He attended the first advertising school created in Italy. In 1956, he founded "Dany Pubblicità". He created the name “Lambretta” for a motorbike of the Innocenti company, the Chicco line for Artsana and the slogan "Brooklyn, the bridge chewing-gum" for Perfetti. After a stay of some months in the Monastery of his friend, the poet David Maria Turoldo, in 1969 Oppi abandoned everything and went to New York with his beloved Franca without even a bean in his pockets. He only lived of painting. Appreciated by the most important American critics and artists, he reached a great success with various exhibitions. At the end of 1969, he came back to Italy and moved to Cascina del Guado, near the Naviglio Grande. Here, he founded the Guado’s Cooperative in 1973 and the “Raccolto Cooperative” in 1991. This activity is now managed by his son Francesco. In 2002, the city of Milan awarded him with the Ambrogino d’Oro. As a fundamental artist of the second part of the 20th century, during the years many of his works have been acquired by museums, galleries and private collections all over the world. |
